The coefficient of restitution, a formula that explains why a ball cannot bounce higher than the place from whence it was dropped without exerting or absorbing energy, is examined by James Orgill of The Action Lab.

He also clarified that there are exceptions to every norm. The half-sphere inside the ball that accumulates and releases energy to enable the ball to bounce higher than its falling point in this particular case is the exception.
