The group HiPEAC, which represents the European advanced computing research community, has released its most recent roadmap report, which examines computing system trends and offers suggestions for the advancement of new technologies.
In its ninth bi-annual report, the HiPEAC Vision 2023 conveys a sense of urgency regarding the growing geopolitical and environmental pressures, identifies six major competitions for technology leadership, and also emphasises the necessity of breaking down silos between technology and applications development to obtain the comprehensive perspective required for global optimizations. The "next web," artificial intelligence (AI), new hardware, cybersecurity, sovereignty, and sustainability are the six main races that are being discussed.
According to Marc Duranton (from CEA), the editor-in-chief of the 234-page HiPEAC Vision 2023, HiPEAC determined the six main races after examining the rate of technological development and the worldwide difficulties facing both business and society. Overall, there is a need for improved cross-disciplinary cooperation, which entails dismantling the silos that now exist between teams working on various components of technological stacks and applications. "In the technical domain, the speed of change is astonishing: new developments in artificial intelligence almost every week, emerging technologies driving significant investments, such as quantum computing, and technological confluences resulting in new paradigms, such as the industrial metaverse, are just a few examples," he said. The current task is to get a comprehensive perspective while effectively merging technologies to manage complexity, for instance with the aid of trustworthy orchestrators and artificial intelligence, to lead us towards an evolution of computing that is more effective, sustainable, and reliable.
Professor Koen De Bosschere of Ghent University, the coordinator of HiPEAC, added, "From a geopolitical point of view, technology is increasingly considered as a strategic asset, with different geographic regions striving for leadership. More international territories are pushing for technical sovereignty as global supply networks come under severe strain, and cyberattacks are becoming more regular and powerful. Additionally, as the effects of climate change become more obvious, sustainability is now being taken seriously, making it a priority to optimise operations to use less energy and raw materials.
Each chapter of the HIPEAC Vision is devoted to a different leadership race and includes a series of stand-alone articles outlining the key issues and offering recommendations. These articles draw on the knowledge of the HiPEAC community. Additionally, they came up with three universal suggestions that apply to all "races," as follows:
