Except for the hardware that is produced in-house, Apple is one company that withholds information on the internal components of its iPhones. Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed for the first time that the business has been used Sony camera sensors in iPhones for more than ten years. As a result, Sony's smartphone camera division saw an increase in income from smartphone image sensors worldwide.

Sony was the only provider of image sensors to have an increase in revenue year over year, according to Counterpoint Research's most recent analysis. According to the article, Sony's expansion is due to Apple using Sony sensors in its iPhone 14 series. The new 48MP IMX803 Sony sensors were debuted in the two Pro iPhone models, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. In actuality, Sony also makes the selfie camera.

Sony's image sensors are also included in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models, as well as in earlier generations like the iPhone 13. All of this resulted in Sony earning an additional $6 per unit, or $300 million, in Q2 2022. As a consequence, Sony ended up with 54% of all income in 2022, an increase of 5 percentage points over 2021.

In terms of income from image sensors used in smartphones worldwide in 2022, Samsung, a South Korean multinational, did well. Despite a 1% decline in sales share to 29%, the firm strengthened its product mix and profited from the trend of camera improvement. This at least partially enabled Samsung to make up for the significant shipment losses.

Since Samsung was the first to mass produce sub-0.7 m high-resolution sensors, it was able to ship 200 million reasonably priced 50MP image sensors in 2022. Another successful image sensor was the S5KJN1. Samsung continues to rule the market for 100MP and higher sensors and has also established standards with the introduction of the 200MP sensor.

This aided the business in shipping over 150 million items in total. With 83% of the market share, Sony and Samsung controlled the world's smartphone image sensor industry. In comparison to 2021, the global image sensor market declined by 6%.
